Baby!

Tomorrow I get to watch a baby delivery!! Hopefully everything works out with the induction and labor so I will be at the hospital for the delivery. I think that this will be the highlight of my time of job shadowing, so hopefully it will happen! Keeping my fingers crossed..

Rad Worker

This is the third week of my internship at CH2MHILL Plateau Remediation Company, and I am thrilled because I finally get to go through the intense class and training course to become qualified to work directly with hazardous materials. Once qualified, I will be able to suit up in HAZ OP suits and go into the areas where uranium and other extremely radio-active materials are present. I am so excited because I am planning a career in either Nuclear Medicine or Radiology and I believe this is the part of my internship experience that will help me the most in achieving those goals.

medical floor

This week I was able to work on the medical floor in the hospital. I liked working on this floor for a few reasons. The first reason is because instead of the ICU, which is always crazy and fast-paced, the medical floor is a little more low-key. There was still always something to do, but they are people getting healthier, instead of people who are in critical condition. That is the second reason why I liked shadowing on that floor. The patients who are taken care of on that floor are patients who are recovering and getting better, instead of getting worse. Many (but not all) patients in the ICU eventually die. There have been patients in the ICU who have died since I have started working there, which is very sad.

When I was shadowing on that floor I was able to learn many things. I learned how and what medication is used for each illness. I learned how to get the meds out of the holding room with the computers. I also learned what a feeding tube actually was (I've never seen one before), and watched medication and food be put through the tube. I also got to watch a patient receive an I.V. which was so interesting!

I would like to start out working on the medical floor. It is not a simple job, but it seems very rewarding. It would be a rewarding feeling to know that the people you help get better and are able to continue with their lives.

First impression with my job

My first impression when I work at Evergreen is how nice people over there are! I heard some not-very-good comments on employee benefits at Evergreen, but my first impression is totally reversed. There are around 20 people working at the Museum, which is a small portion of the company. But people work nicely with one another. They chat and joke around office, making the work relaxing and fun.

My task at first time is pretty overwhelming for me, because there are so many new things and rules that I don't know. It is not only the rule of accounting, but also the my supervisor's rule to make the work easier. So far I have done invoices and PO (purchase order) of the whole museum. But I know that I will need to continue learning a lot and a lot!

So after my first week and a half of job shadowing I have learned a few things. The first thing is that shadowing people is actually pretty boring! It is interesting and very beneficial to see what people do in their everyday jobs, but it's so hard to not be able to be more hands on. Being a student without any qualifications makes it hard to be able to do more in the situations that I am involved it; there are so many laws about what you can/cannot do with patients so it makes it a little more challenging. However, I am having so much fun working at the hospital. My most favorite spot that I have worked in is in the ICU. It is so fast-paced and there is always things going on, which makes it fun and thrilling. I also worked in family practice one day with my mom's friend, and that was also very fun. It was more of just everyday people, but the variety in ages of patients was nice. I got to sit in on many different appointments, including a baby and a very sweet old man. I have also worked in PT and OT, but I find those jobs a little boring and repetitive. It has been so great to see what different people's roles are in the hospital, and I think that this will be so great and informational for me to help make decisions about my future.
